Howdy,
Northwest Forest Conservancy picked up a couple crosscut saws, had
them sharpened, and the trail team put them to work. Everyone had a good time
and I expect them to be out next year to work on 544 and other trails
in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness. Hope to make it to one of your trail work events as well.
Regards,
Ron
Here's a copy of the report we sent to the Forest Service.
Trail Name: Bagby Trail Trail Number: 544
Section from: Bagby Hot Springs to: 5 miles south
Members On Crew: 4
total: 46 Hrs of trail work
Tread Maint.: 3 sections repaired
Brushing: 3 miles pruned
Logging Out: 33 downed logs removed from the trail
General Trail Conditions:
Removal
of downed trees and logs across the trail is the most pressing need and
our major focus this trip. Brush overgrowth is prevelant along the path
and completely crosses the trail in many places. We cleared the worst
sections along the 5 miles we covered, but left the rest for later. The
tread is generally in good shape with the exception of several areas of
water erosion and trail creep and one section where the log supporting
the downhill side is falling away. Hikers have detoured the trail
clumsily around three large root balls in another section.
Additional Work Needed:
The
remaining 6 miles of trail need to be logged out. After this, the
un-pruned 8 miles need brushing work. Tread work should be next,
install water bars to reduce the erosion problems and widen the trail
2-3 feet uphill to restore it's original position in a couple places
past Pal Creek. Repair the section where the trail is falling away or
move it uphill a few feet (get good photos of the damage so a decision
can be made). Similarly, we need to decide how to handle the uprooted
trail sections around the root balls.

Remarks:
The workers were enthusiastic and safety conscious and definitely enjoyed the experience. We learned a lot about what tools worked well and have a few to return as defective implements. It was a good weekend for the work. We only encountered one hiker during the trip and the weather was warm enough to be comfortable at night without being too hot to work during the day. We weren't bothered by mosquitos or other insects. We did step over a large pile of bear droppings on the trail about 4 miles from the Hot Springs. We hung our food and didn't have any animal issues.
