  • High Rock circa 1940

I ran across this image recently, from a private collection of travel snapshots:

Looks to be an early lookout, and not the design shown in more recent photos from the 1960s. But here's a question: was there ever a structure in the saddle, just east of the summit, or was that always just a turnaround? Seems like it must have been graded beyond what a road would require.

  • I do know there was a CCC camp in the area, with LOTS of activity in the 30s including multiple trails built and lots of reseeding efforts.  It sure looks bare in that photo, the area has really recovered.  The High Rock panorama photo from that era doesn't pan far enough over to see...

  • Nice picture. Out house lower left of lookout.
Taken from CCC camp from the west at what is now a four way junction, where the road from the springs reaches the crest.
Shows the tent platforms. There was a building to the left of the platforms (mess hall?) but it is gone in this photo.
The main buildings (six) where at the site from which this photo was taken.
Would be useful to scan picture for maximum resolution.
