  • Some Trails Begging Exploration

Here are a handful of old trails that beg exploration by savvy, experienced, and careful trail hounds:

Old 511 -- South Fork Roaring River -- starts somewhere below Frazier Turnaround.

Old 509 -- Cougar Creek -- starts just west of Signal Buttes, small pullout on the right, on the Frazier Road.

Plaza Creek 506 -- Starts at the bottom of Lookout Springs Campground, 4610 Road.

If/when this area becomes wilderness, these trails could become significant, if we can document them. Please don't get lost.

  • It has been many years (25+) since I last drove the Abbott Road 4610. I started at High Rock and traveled west, and I recall at least one tricky washed-out area. What is the current status between Twin Springs and High Rock?

    • Between the 791 Salmon Butte Trailhead (old road) and the old 790 Trail (used to get towards Salmon Lake) there is  a twenty foot slump. Some people do get through with four wheel drive. Haven't seen it yet this year. The steepest drop was on the west end of the slump.

  • Went for a late afternoon drive on the 4th with wife and daughter. Ended up at Twin Springs, which had fair amount a garbage spread around. Wasn't really prepared for a clean-up (no bags or gloves) so just picked up a few items. Found the top of Plaza Creek 506, checked it out for about a quarter mile. Pretty good shape, only two small trees across the trail. Next time I'll have more resources (saw, loppers, etc.). The 4610 road is pretty brushy in some areas, and we turned around just past the Plaza Lake trail head due to a tree blocking the road, so I don't know if we could could have made it through the washed out area.

Also found an abandoned and burned out car off the 4614 road. My wife is going to report the license number to authorities.

Also, it looks like the Fanton Trail 505 travels west and east from Road 4613; the west part is not indicated on the info sheet. Where does it go?

    • Plaza Creek trail goes about a mile or so from Twin Springs then seems to get swallowed up by the loose terrain...

My daughter and I spent a lot of time last summer clearing brush on that trail, but we had my little one with us so we only made it about a mile.  I think it gets really faint the lower you get.  Don't think that was a major route, especially after the Abbot Road was constructed in the 20s.

    • Hello, Joe - just read your post about dumping at Twin Springs. If you haven't already, it's a good idea to report this sort of thing to Metro's illegal dumping enforcement program. Metro will often do forensic work on dumped material, and go after the responsible parties - most of the dumping comes from a small number of people, and fines or prosecution can be just the cure for this behavior. Here's a link to Metro's site:

Metro's role is limited to actual dumping, not campground garbage - not sure if what you saw at Twin Springs fit that category.

I rode my bike down Abbot Road last year, and the slide area is pretty gnarly. I wouldn't even consider taking a 4WD through it at this point - it's a very large landslide, and seems to be growing.
