I've read a couple of bits recently about the Elk Lake road (off the Breitenbush/Detroit) being improved this past summer - anyone have any firsthand experience? My recollection from past visits is that it couldn't get much worse. Kind of like driving down an abandoned riverbed...but beautiful country. Planning on hiking up Battle Ax this coming summer.
Kevin,
Yes, the road to Elk Lake was improved to move in several concrete pit toilets at the east end of the lake. The old wood outhouses were unusable. Unfortunately most people don't know how to crap in the woods properly forcing the FS to make this move.... Next summer Elk Lake will have a new look. The FS, headed up by the Detroit Ranger Station, will convert the semi primitive camp spots to a Pay Campground. They will most likely station a camp host in the grounds to be a presence in the area which is now needed since the improved road has invited many more wilderness abusers into the area.
The FS told (Promised) me that they are not planning to maintain the road. I'm happy about that...
This is a wonderful time to visit the lake. You'll need snowshoes to get there though. The lake should be mostly frozen by now with several feet of snow on top.
As well as summiting Battle Ax, plan on tagging Mount Beachie also...and don't forget your camara.
