Headed down that way last weekend, good timing with a nice break in the rain. Lichens are thick down there, rushing water everywhere.
FS 63 is clear all the way down, but it is very early in the winter season. Went about 2 miles on the trail, other than a couple smaller down trees the route is clear and the tread is very nice. That's a historic FS trail, used to go to a guard station down about 8 miles on Elk Lake.
That's sad, I hate to hear of any development like that. In my experince tho, it doesn't seem to impact wilderness use much, people seem to want to congregate around the facilities, weirdly. I've hiked up Lost Lake in the summer; while the camp is packed, the trails were solitary. I'm glad to hear of the motor ban, that helps a lot. Olallie is still pure and peaceful because of that.
I just have an old map from 1935 that shows a GS there, that's the only info I have. They were scattered across the mountains in logical places, connected by trails and then abandoned once roads started punchin' in by the '50s.
I would, but I have crappy resources. Most of my maps are copy-of-a-copy ad infinitum....
There was talk of Trail Advocates having decent quality scans of old Clackamas maps available, but am not sure how far along this project is.
What say thee, Mr. D?
