Does anyone know anything about the Sugar Pine Botanical area off FR#6380? I see that the road is also the TH for Elk Lake Creek #559. I plan on going there this weekend to check out cones. I can't seem to find any information on it and I'm hoping someone here will. Thank you.

  • 63 is closed up near Little Fan camp so you'd have to take a LONG detour to get down there.

I don't know for sure, but in other parts of the district such botanical areas are tree plantation study areas.

    • There is some sugar pine there. I think the deal is that it is the extreme of the range. Although there are a few on the divide between Bracket Mtn and Burnt Mtn which the BLM monitor as indicators of disease migration.

Botanical areas may not be funded anymore. The Bagby Natural Area has become wilderness. I could be wrong, but I think these are the legacy of better times for funding and research.

Could call the office and talk with the botanist.
