  • ONRC Hike to Serene Lake

    Interesting...
    I wonder if they will have a hike in 5 years on the same trail?  Or will say "too many down trees"........................
    I also wonder if the folks guiding the hike have worked on the trail?  Or even know about advocates?
    Don't get me wrong, they did a great job in the late 80s-90s securing wild lands when old growth clearcutting was at an all time high.  But times change and so must we all.

    Come see the footprints of glaciers as we explore the deep, green Serene Lake of the Roaring River valley.

    Difficulty: Moderate-Strenuous
    Distance: 7.7 mile loop
    Elevation Gain: 1,500 feet

    Location: Roaring River Wilderness, Mt. Hood National Forest

    Welcome to one of Oregon's newly designated Wilderness areas! This hike takes us through new wilderness, forested plateaus, and the more temperate Cache Meadow. Cool your feet in the lake before catching a perfect glimpse of Mt. Hood and three Washington peaks.

    Now Wilderness, the once and former Roaring River Roadless area was the largest unroaded expanse on the Mount Hood National Forest yet to be protected. The River is home to salmon and steelhead as well as steep sloped that provide beautiful views absent the clear-cuts that are so prevalent in other parts of the Northwest

    • That's a real good question. The only way to get from the Roaring River to Serene Lake would be from the Highway by way of Dry Ridge, of from 4611, but neither of these would be loop of 7.7 miles.
      I think they are doing the Rock Lakes Loop and are not getting near the river.
      At any rate, the trails will not be worked over as they have previously, and, they will need to keep the party size down to 12, that includes dogs, or they will be violating the law.

      • Sounds like they might need to "ground truth" their group to make sure they keep it legal. Anyone interested in hiking that area when they go in? I wonder how the Rock Lakes trail system fared over the winter.
