  • Lake Lenore fire

Maybe there's a bright side to this fire.  The Mt. Hood NF website has a good infrared map of the fire perimeter.  It looks like everything between the ridge above Lenore, Knob Rock and the W. side of Schreiner has been burnt to some degree.  Maybe this could provide an opportunity to open up some of the old Schreiner Peak trail that pretty much disappeared E. of the Lake Lenore jct.  It will no doubt eliminate a lot of the brush!  I'll be interested to check it out after things cool down.

  • Sometimes the War on Fire involves the creation of fire lines which themselves can be useful as trails, often along ridges.
Another benefit is that when fighting the War on Fire in wilderness, the chainsaw is used freely and occasionally a trail will get cleared.
Be prepared to be somewhat aghast when you see the number of trees cut down.
If any system trails have been damaged by the firefighters, we will all have to put a lot of pressure on the Forest Service to repair them. The Skookum Lake trail became fire line and we were promised repair, but it never happened. Now we volunteers are slowly fixing it.
I do not plan to go up to Lake Lenore, but I do want to know if there is damage to the trail in. As for the old trail beyond, that's up to users to find and make useful.

    • The Lake Lenore fire has disappeared from the nwcc website as of today.  I'm not sure what that means.  Maybe that it is out?  Or controlled?  If so, that is good news.....

      • I noticed that too and wondered the same thing.  I was up on Mt Lowe on Wednesday and took this photo.  You can see some smoke in the valley beyond Schreiner Peak.  Later that afternoon the rains came and hopefully gave the fire area a good drenching.  It was pouring pretty heavily as I was driving home.
