It does show up on some maps from the 50s and 60s, both FS and USGS.

After your comment, I decided to go look, and I think I see the camp you are talking about . It looks in pretty much the correct location. I'm surprised it is on maps that late - it looks like that camp should be older than that. Late 50's through the late 60's maps show it.
Kirk, to answer your question, the water feature is "big" - but maybe not in the way you are thinking.
