I would say at this point on the trail, 'twas exactly southwest and exactly west from the banks of the Clackamas. This section of the trail was also the closest it got to the main stem of the river.

Well Brian --- you've solved this mystery.  If I'm remembering correctly, this tree is just west of the quarry that's north of the Hillockburn swimming pool.  There were a few trees in the older timber there that still had some wire hanging off of them. The 1916 Estacada map shows the intersection of the South Fork Trail and a trail heading down to the confluence of the Clackamas and the South Fork Clackamas very near this location.  If you poke around in the bigger timber between the quarry and Hillockburn Road, you should be able to find these remnants.
