It looked like way too much work to me. The person or persons doing the chopping probably didn't start with a wide enough cut and had to roll it and chop from the otherside inorder to finish the cut. Anyway there are 5-6 more logs down that I crossed that hadn't been cut out of the trail  and I didn't go the full length of the trail.

On this other log, I took a photo of, it looks like they were able to cut all the way through.
