ESTACADA – A man found dead early Thursday fell off a 230-foot cliff at Goat Mountain south of Estacada, a popular viewpoint for watching the sunrise.

Crews from the Clackamas County sheriff's search-and-rescue team and theMolalla Fire District are working to recover the man's body from the site, just inside the boundary of the Mount Hood National Forest.

Lt. Clint Shaver, a fire district spokesman, said several friends who had gathered at the viewpoint near the radio towers atop the 4,200-foot mountain called 911 shortly after 3 a.m. to report the accident.

"They told us they were using flashlights, but couldn't see where he fell," Shaver said.

So firefighters, sheriff's deputies, Mountain Wave Emergency Communicationsand Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue sent teams to the mountain and below, hoping to find the man alive.

"Unfortunately, he was deceased," Shaver said. "Falling from that height, there was very little chance of survival."

The man's name has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Sgt. Nathan Thompson, sheriff's office spokesman, said the man's body was found by a member of his party while heading down the mountain.

Shaver said firefighters temporarily were hampered by faulty maps that indicated someU.S. Forest Service roads were open that actually had been closed to traffic. He said search officials then contacted the Oregon Department of Forestry, which provided updated maps.

Yikes! Hard not to wonder if drugs could've been a factor, considering it happened at 3 on Thursday morning.

It is a precarious place if you had ever been there. The one time I was there, probably thirty years ago now, my wife and I saw river otters swimming in Clear Lake that is clearly visible and fatally below if one was to misstep.
