Anyone interested in the shooting issue at MP36 and other places along the Clackamas River should email the new district ranger in Estacada. Believe it or not, there are some within the Forest Service who believe in closing the area to shooting just as they closed Memaloose Rd. Enforcement will be another issue but there might be some additional enforcement in the corridor this year because PGE also has concerns that the shooting is too close to the new boating access area at MP35.

I've always thought moving the gate closer to the highway and moving some rock piles around who greatly limit parking which would make it less conveinient for shooters. Unfortunately the last work at that site by ODOT actually made it a better place to shoot by increasing the sight line for shooting and moving a lot of rock to the edges. I know they were probably trying to make it safer but it certainly increased the amount of people using that area.

One of the other areas seeing increased shooting is the rock quarry on the bluff above MP41 which is only a half mile away from Roaring River. There is no safe backstop at that site. The Forest Service is also aware of use there, as I was out there with them last year, and I think there is some interest from them at closing that site.

The recreational coordinator for the corridor is Kathleen Walker based out of the Sandy office. She would be a good person to cc any emails.

Portland and its suburbs need Civic Rifle Ranges that are free of charge. Then they wouldn't need to drive up there to shoot.

I also wonder why Oregon City wants all that lead so close to their drinking water. OMG!

There are private shooting ranges scattered about - you pass one on the road out to Estacada. There is a public one at the Sherrifs building at 82nd and Sunnybrook.

Currently Oregon City is exercising their water rights within their city limits at the mammoth structure on Clackamas River Drive. They are beginning to make some noise about going back to taking it straight from the North Fork again.

Currently there is over 400,000 who get their water from the Lower Clackamas through multiple agencies. With the impending startup of the new also mammoth Lake Oswego intake on Portland Avenue in West Linn, the number will be closing in on half a million.

Urban shooting ranges need to be free to compete with the free shooting off the highway.

I don't think the FS can do anything about it other than move the shooting around from one side to another.

Remember also that some consider shooting a recreational activity.

Do you mean from the South Fork of the Clackamas like what was done up until the 80's? (like maybe re-building/expanding that pipeline) Or do you mean from the North Fork Reservoir? Just curious, as that is the first time I've heard that option discussed.

Directly from the North Fork River, probably with updated facilities. The reservoir would be dicey and generally they don't allow boating on water reservoirs.

I was a little surprised by this as I had heard years ago that they had lost the right-of-way for the gravity feed pipeline they once used. So one of these stories may not be true.
