Been really quiet here lately, so thought I'd post this quick trip report.
I decided to take a quick hike today with my dog. Since we've had snow, the options were limited for trails. I decided to try to get to the lower Fanton trailhead. Thankfully, the roads were completely clear until just before the trailhead, where there was just a tiny bit of slushy snow.
The trail was in good shape and I think I found where some very old way trails might have intersected it. Unfortunately, my GPS was on the fritz so I didn't get a track. I also followed the trail out to the FS boundary (west of 4613) - the trail there is in PERFECT shape, however it abruptly ends at the boundary since there is a recent clearcut on that private land which obliterated the trail. I wonder if it was followable all the way to the old area called Fanton? It is certainly a well constructed trail.
After hiking part of Fanton (we went up about 2.5 miles or so until the snow was getting kind of deep), I decided to drive up 4613 to 4610 and see how far I could get. I got up to about 3500' or so before I decided to turn around - it was still relatively easy going, but the snow was probably 4 or 5" deep at that point and since I was by myself, I didn't want to get stuck. I got to within probably .75 mile of Lookout Springs I think. Won't be long before that will be a memory for the year, though.
A nice day in the woods, although it was very gusty on the south side of that ridge. It even blew my hat off once!
