Pretty cloudy weather while staying at Gold Butte last weekend so instead of doing the Battle Ax hike we hiked Elk Lake Creek from Elk Lake to the site of the old Battle Creek Shelter. Very pleasant hiking for a cloudy day. There are some nice big trees in there! Also a big bonus: millions of ripe huckleberries! I've tried to find photos of the old Battle Creek Shelter, but it's gone so long now that I haven't been successful. Anyone have a photo of it?
The trail doesn't look like it's received maintenance in awhile. There were about a dozen downed trees on that four-mile stretch and a sad old boardwalk.
12 Trees in 4 miles is pretty good for a Clackamas district trail...
I've not found a photo of the battle creek shelter either - it would be interesting to see what it looked like.
It looks like there was a problem uploading that image you linked to. Can you try it again? I'm curious as I don't recall seeing a boardwalk (but it has been a long time since I hiked that southern part of the trail).
Weird about the image. I deleted it and re-uploaded it.
