After seeing a trip report on Portland Hikers a few days ago saying the flowers were in bloom, I decided to take a trip to Anvil Lake and Black Wolf Meadows today. The meadow was pretty soggy still, and there were lots of bugs, but if you kept moving it wasn't too bad. There were lots of wildflowers in the meadow, though which were really pretty.
It is also interesting to me the perception I had of the trail. The last time I hiked it, I remember dry, brown forest. This time it was very green and full of life. I'm pretty sure the last time I did this trail was in the fall. The meadow wasn't wet, and I don't remember any bugs. I'm glad I did this hike again. I really liked the meadow in its early season colors.
One thing I noticed on the way out - a tree near the trailhead that had the unique pink and black striped flagging on it. I looked around, but didn't see anything that looked historical or unique. There were a couple of small areas that looked like they had been cleared. Does anyone know if there was maybe a cabin or something near the trailhead at one point? Here is a picture of the tree with the ribbon on it:
Kind of growed back in, but I think that's a peeled cedar. For baskets I think.
I believe I was once told many have ax (steel) cuts in them, which dates them to recent history of course.
Had been a popular berry area but is growing in.
