Does anyone know where to get information on snowshoeing off Hwy. 224 and the surrounding F.S. roads? I love this area to hike in, so I'd love to snowshoe here also. If anyone here does snowshoe this area can you tell me about it? Thank you.
Patti
While I have hiked and backpacked a lot of the trails in this area, I've not snowshoed any of them. I've hike a few trails where there has been snow, but not really enough for snowshoes. If anyone has done any snowshoeing, I'd like to hear about it as well.
Most of our trails start high, so road shoeing would be required to get to the trail. The lower trails which lead to snow are not often blazed (!), Dry Ridge, Cripple Creek (not well) so they could be hard to follow in snow.
We have often thought that lower Cottonwood Mdws trail would be good to get to shoeing because it come out into the open at average snow line in open country, but, it is little used.
We have some non system old trails that rise nicely to snow, but you would need to be well famliarized with them to use them now.
There are a few people who lead snowshoeing trips in the District. I will try to get them to post.

I would LOVE to take a snowshoe trip in the district.....I've not ever seen or heard of anyone leading a trip, but if there is one, sign me up!
On Christmas Day I drove up to snowshoe Cottonwoods Mdws., but I chickened out. I decided since I hadn't hiked the trail, I shouldn't attempt to snowshoe it. So, instead parked by the closed gate at Road 57 and snowshoed 57 about 4 miles in. It was beautiful and the only person we saw was a PGE guy. It was great. I liked that we didn't have to worry about finding the trail.
