From today's Oregonian:
TODAY IN HISTORY
In Oregon - 50 years ago: The debris from a missing West Coast Airlines jetliner that had been flying from Eugene to Portland was found 16 miles east of Estacada, according to The Oregonian. The crash killed all 18 people aboard. “The plane slammed into steep and heavily wooded (Tumala) Mountain about four miles southwest of Zigzag,” the report said.
What is amazing to me is that even after 50 years the impact area is still very visible. It appears the plane hit hard and hot fires burned for a while, sterilizing the soil in the area. Very little vegetation has grown in even after all this time. I think they got their location off a bit - it hit Salmon Mountain, not Squaw (Tumala) mountain, about 3 miles to the northeast.
